We often read words from philosophers and spiritual Teachings telling us, “Know thyself.” People typically define their knowledge of self through their roles and the groups to which they belong. Someone might say, “I am a divorced white man, a truck driver, a father, an American, and a Christian.” Another person might say, “I am a single Asian woman, a teacher, a mother, a Canadian, and a Buddhist.” We all play these types of roles, but who are we? Marketing campaigns typically give us very depressing messages about who we are, telling us that we are all rapidly aging, wrinkling, balding people for whom endless medications and procedures are available to handle all the medical problems in store for us. We are also bombarded with messages that we are not doing enough, we don’t own enough possessions, we don’t have enough money, we’re not making the right choices, etc. In stark contrast with all those depressing messages is the lesson that we are all children of the Divine. But this is just another role. Along with your parental status, marital status, and job title, you’re also a child of the Divine. What does it *mean* to be a child of the Divine? I think each of us answers for ourselves the larger question of who we really are, but here is something to consider today as you play all of your various roles in life: A kitten becomes a cat. A puppy becomes a dog. A foal becomes a horse. What does a child of the Divine become? May you remember today that you are more than all of your roles!
