Before our Leadership Retreat last week, I had a conversation with my wise mother where I asked her: "If you had five days with a room full of new-school leaders that were eager to make a greater impact on the world, what would be the one message that you would want them to hear?" Almost without hesitation, she said: "Make sure they deeply understand the importance of knowing what they want." As I sat with her words, I realized how simple and truly profound they were. You see, every day you get up and live your life. Depending on your state of consciousness, you are either making conscious choices or simply reacting to the world around you. Regardless, look at how many of those choices are truly guided by the question: "What Do You Want?" After I hung up the phone with mom, I decided to experiment for myself. For the next 24 hours, I would let the question "what do I want?" guide every one of my choices. To make it real, I would literally have to ask myself "what do I want?" in every single moment. Moving through the world this way created a very different reality for me. Almost instantaneously, I realized how much time I spent doing what I thought I was supposed to doing or what I had to do, instead of doing "what I wanted". It also made me realize how important it was to be clear on exactly what you want, both energetically and tangibly. You can have an energetic desire for things like peace, happiness, love; and you can have tangible desires for things like a house, to make a million dollars, or to buy a new pair of shoes. To really get what you want in life, both need to be crystal clear. When I do my private coaching with purpose-driven entrepreneurs, the entire first session is devoted to clarifying what they want in life and business. Time and time again, I'm always amazed at how powerful this exercise can be to help people get clear on the full spectrum of what they really want. Often times, the most challenging part is really owning one's true desires for material stuff. As an experiment, see if you can take some time today to ask the question: "What do I really want rnfinancially?" (This is the question that most people have the hardest time with). Get crystal clear on a number. Answers like: "enough money to be comfortable" or "to not have to worry about money"fall into the category of vague and un-clear. Once you have an answer, write it down. Spend the day with this clear desire in mind and notice how it shapes the thoughts you think, the actions you take, and the people you surround yourself with. It's truly remarkable how quickly this one question can change your life. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts. I do read all of them!
