Motivation needs goal setting to accomplish anything in life. You cannot have one without the other. You can be really motivated, but if you do not know why you are motivated then you not accomplish anything.
Goal setting needs motivation too because you cannot set a goal and stop at that point. How many times have you set a goal only to give up on it at the first obstacle?
This is one of my main problems. I set goals, but do not have enough motivation to accomplish my goals. The motivation part is the activity part of the goal. The goal is figuring out what you want to accomplish. However, without the motivating activity you will not take the necessary action.
Part 1 Goal Setting
Let's see what we can do together to set goals and use motivation to accomplish our goals. I will start with one of my goals. I want to spend a month in St. Thomas in February 2012. For the month I would need about $4,000 for rent, air travel and food expenses.
The other part of my goal is to create a business I can run from anywhere in the world and earn at least $4,000 a month.
This is the goal setting part of my equation. Now you need to write down your goal setting part.
Part 2 Motivation
Here is my motivation for spending February 2012 in St. Thomas. I am tired of the cold winters here in Northern Ohio. The past four or five years have been terribly cold and snowy.
The month of February has been particularly bad. February seems so bad because we are done celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays by this time of year. In addition, football season is done with the Super Bowl the first Sunday in February. February may be the shortest month of the year, but it still is a LONG month with all the snow and cold.
Getting out of the snow and cold is my motivation and Florida is not quite warm enough so I looked towards the Caribbean. The Caribbean has numerous options from Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, St. Thomas to Jamaica and finally Grand Cayman. All would meet my needs of sand and sun, but I have to pick one so I picked St. Thomas.
Motivation the Hard Part
Motivation is the most difficult part because you need to keep up daily activity towards your goal. If weight loss is one of your goals then working out daily is a necessary part of motivation and goal setting. You cannot set a goal to lose weight then only workout once a week and expect to reach your goals.
Importance of Daily Activity
Daily activity is one my problems with accomplishing my goals. Actually it is more procrastination than not doing something. Writing this article is one part of my daily activities I need to do on a daily basis.
To accomplish our goals we need a checklist of activities we need to do on a daily basis. We all have fixed activity, which need to be completed daily to move us towards our goals. Most people would have only 5 or 6 fixed activities, which must get done to accomplish their goals. Now some of the activities may be boring or difficult, but usually these activities are the most important.
Take some time this week to write down your goals and then write out the motivation for accomplishing your goal or goals. Best of luck to all of you.
