Among the most common symptoms of stress, anxiety and panic attacks are tense muscles. Muscle relaxation techniques are a necessary component of any recovery solution for those who suffer from muscle tension. Massage therapy has the most scientific support of the several muscle relaxation techniques available. WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY? Massage is generally defined as kneading skin and muscles by using rubbing and pressure motions. Massage is usually done with the hands but it doesn't have to be. It can be done with a professional massage therapist, friend, tools available on the market, a partner or even by yourself. While there are a number of different terms to describe massage techniques: Trigger point, Swedish, deep tissue and sports massage are some of the types that can be split into essentially two groups: Deep Massage: Forceful pressure is applied to the body in this muscle relaxation technique. This approach is intended to reach deep muscles and connecting tissues. Light Massage: A lighter touch is used in light massage. Gentle rubbing and kneading of the skin and outer muscle layers is used to achieve relaxation. SCIENTIFIC STUDY TIES DEEP MASSAGE TO REDUCED STRESS LEVELS. A direct tie between reduced levels of stress hormones and deep massage was discovered through a recent scientific study. Study participants were divided into two groups, one group receiving deep massage, the other light massage. Periodic blood samples were taken. These blood tests showed a meaningful drop in stress hormones for those participants receiving deep massage. HOW TO GET A MASSAGE Locate a male or female massage therapist (often called a masseuse or masseur) that is licensed or certified to practice massage therapy in your state, if you can afford a professional massage. Sometimes, however, the cost of a professional massage can be a bit steep. An alternative to a professional massage is learning this muscle relaxation technique yourself. You will be able to benefit from massage therapy as often as you need or want, whether you practice with a partner or alone. Imagine how good you'd feel if a person you are close to began to massage your neck and shoulders without your asking -- it's a great gift idea! So take a closer look at massage therapy. A critical tool in your efforts to overcome stress and anxiety, this muscle relaxation technique promises excellent rewards.
