The month of November is usually equated with the Thanksgiving holiday at the end of the month. But don't forget, November also celebrates Veterans Day on the 11th. This federal holiday was chosen to be celebrated on this particular day due to its connection to the end of WWI. It was officially named in 1954 and honors veterans who have served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, National Guard, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force). Now, since 1996, the entire month of November is known as National Military Families Appreciation Month. During November (and beyond), be sure to show your appreciation to those who have (and currently do) serve for our country, by supporting their loved ones.

Ways to Celebrate Military Family National Appreciation Month

  1. Donate your time or a monetary contribution to Turkeys for Troops, which provides a free frozen turkey to military members and their families.
  2. Put together a care package for a local military family. If you don't know of any in your area, search your local social media pages for information.
  3. Whether it's an active duty member, a veteran, spouse, child, or any other person closely associated with someone who is or has served, say thank you. As we all know, saying thank you is a very simple thing to do that can sometimes go a very long way.
  4. If you live within driving distance of a military base or are able to donate money or goods to one, check their November calendar and see how you can help give back.
  5. There are many organizations that work to support our military and their families. Choose your favorite and see what kind of volunteer opportunities they may have. Just a few examples are Blue Star Families, the Yellow Ribbon Fund, and the National Military Family Association.
