Organized For Disaster

September is National Preparedness Month. The Department of Homeland Security is encouraging Americans to be prepared in case of disaster. Are you ready? Here are some tips to help you get ready:

Prepare an emergency kit containing:
• Water—one gallon per person per dayn • Food—at least a three day supply of non-perishable food and a can opene
• A battery powered or hand crank radion • Flashlight and extra batteriesn • First aid kitn • A whistle to signal for helpn • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic and duct tape to create a safe shelte
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic tiesn • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilitiesn • Local mapsn • Prescription medications and glassesn • Supplies for babies and animalsn • Important family documentsn • Cash or traveler’s checks

Make a plan:
• Decide on an out of town contact to call since long distance calls may be easier to make.
• Provide each family member with the number and a prepaid phone card or coins.
• Decide on a place to meet in case you are separated when the event occurs.

A little advanced planning can help you survive any disaster that could come and you will have a peace of mind knowing you are prepared.
