Psycho-Semantics instructs us to avoid a phrase such as "Don't forget the keys" because the subconscious may interpret that as instructions "to forget the keys." The 'operative' word is FORGET. Say instead, "I'll REMEMBER the keys before I walk out the door."

ANOTHER EXAMPLE: Let's say you use the phrase "I want more growth in my life." The subconscious might start producing warts, tumors, more body weight, or even cancer. I think you see the danger if the subconscious takes your words literally. To avoid a mistaken interpretation, say instead, "I am developing a stronger personality." Or you might say, "I am expanding my vocabulary," which will influence people more favorably.

You've heard the phrase. "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it." I say instead, "Be careful HOW you ask for it, you might get something else."

ANOTHER EXAMPLE--of the same concept: Words are very powerful. By using just the right word or phrase you can create any wonderful emotion you choose for yourself or for others. That's the good news. Conversely, choose the wrong word and the results can be disastrous. The secret is to provide yourself with a sufficient range of verbal options from which to choose in order to always get it right.

I want you to picture me holding a juicy ripe, bright yellow lemon in my left hand--and in my right hand I hold a very sharp knife.

I slowly slice open this lemon. I can smell its freshness, its tartness. Just thinking about the taste of this very sour lemon is making my mouth water! It's probably making your mouth water as well, right about now, correct?!

Slowly, I hold one half of this magnificent lemon over my lips and I squeeze its luscious juice into my mouth and onto my tongue. My eyes squint as if I'm looking straight into the sun and my lips 'pucker up' because it's so sour...so tart...so mouthwatering. But boy, does it taste great! Now, did you notice how I carefully constructed my words to paint you just the right mental image to induce the exact emotions that I wanted? To make your mouth water like Niagara Falls!

I think you now understand how influential words can be. And that it is possible to affect your mind and the mind of others with 'special words.'

You can 'linguistically map' the thinking of others to persuade them to your way of thinking. How powerful is that?

All Power in Language Is Based on the Definition Applied

How you label (define) an event or circumstance determines exactly how it will be perceived by others. Change the definition and you have changed the perception. Now that's real power.

EXAMPLE: Were you to ask a person the following question, "What do you THINK about religion?" you might get this reply. "I think too many television evangelists are getting rich and powerful using religion as a vehicle." However, were you to replace the word THINK with the word FEEL in that same question, you would probably get an entirely different response. He might say "I feel the influence of religious moral standards on children will guide them toward a happier and more fulfilling life."

EXAMPLE: Let's examine the difference between the words KILL and MURDER when used to influence the outcome of a difficult circumstance.

Let's say you were stopped on a dark street by a person holding a gun. You might beg, "Please, don't shoot me." He might shoot you anyway. That's because the word SHOOT has no effect. On the other hand, you might instead ask, "Do you really want a MURDER on your hands?" The odds are that he will be reluctant to face the consequences for MURDER. That simple optional word choice could save your life. The conclusion. There are no unimportant words.

How Experience Is Mediated through Language

We soak up words overheard from others like sponges. Then, what the ear hears, the mouth repeats. You begin using the words as your own, thus molding your view of reality. These learned words become the portal through which your perception of the world is molded. They seduce the mind into molding your perception of reality. But, when you learn new words, you gain a new reality.
