Recycling and environmentally friendly activities are not just a social issue they are very much a part of the business world as well. As the government drives forward on all cylinders to further create an eco-friendly economy and remain in line with EC regulations there is a responsibility for businesses and organisations to ensure policies and processes within all business transactions adhere to eco-friendly directives. But at the same time business mangers should view these issues as a positive way of marketing their business in the future and not as another regulations headache. WEEE Compliance regulations WEEE recycling (waste of electrical and electronic equipment) applies to all organisations and businesses that either sell or manufacture EEE. To support businesses and organisations with their recycling responsibilities the government initiated the facilitation of National compliance schemes. The WEEE compliance regulations apply to all organizations and businesses regardless of size that either sell or manufacture EEE. In other words, you need to be part of a scheme if you sell or manufacture products which are simply defined as ones which either would ordinarily require a battery or a plug to fulfill their primary function. Both producers and manufacturers of household and non-household commodities may find themselves having to follow the compliance recycling guidelines. So the business manage does not have to worry too much about excessive paperwork, the WEEE compliance scheme will register clients with the appropriate environment agency and provide the necessary data in the correct format. The schemes will also have the responsibility of creating publicity campaigns in order to raise awareness of the need to recycle batteries and the responsibilities to the business sector. Benefits to Business While all this can sound like another form of red tape that the business manage has to adhere to it should also be taken into account that adhering to corporate social responsibilities and standards such as the WEEE compliance regulations can have an overall positive effect too. Clear promotion and marketing of the fact that an organisation is aware of eco-friendly issues and adapting processes and policies to deal with it can only lead to a more dynamic brand. Trust is naturally facilitated in an organisation which has more than just internal financial profits as its goals. This in turn is likely to lead to more effective business transactions and a more substantial customer base.
