Mumsnet started some year ago as a parenting advice and forum site where families could exchange advice, chat and generally discuss the task of raising their offspring. Since then the group has become quite politicised. During the recent general election David Cameron spoke directly to them, on behalf of parents everywhere; and they have been known to lobby and petition for what they believe in. Most recently Mumsnet campaigned to get a storyline in Eastenders changed. The Times newspaper has labelled the website: ‘The country’s most popular meeting point for parents’, its hugely popular, and whether you agree with their politics or not, it’s worth keeping in the loop with the news on this website – it has clout, and it offers sound advice! Emma’s Diary Emma’s Diary is a site dedicated to becoming and being a mother or father from pre conception to after the baby is born. It details what is happening to you and your baby as it grows through pictures and the character ‘Emma’s’ diary. It gives helpful advice and tips on looking after yourself, your child and your relationship, whether your a Mum or Dad (though the biological stuff tends to be directed at the female body); with some great tips for diet and physical and mental wellbeing. The site is run in association with the Royal College of General Practitioners, so the health advice is sound. It also offers various free gifts and money off vouchers for all parenting stages, and a helpful newsletter to coincide with your gestation period. Babynames Babynames is another site that is aimed at parents-to-be during the conception and preconception stage, the friendly forum will offer parenting advice, but the site is generally focused on what name to pick for your child. It has news and features articles and lists of the most popular names. You can also discuss your choice on the forum, but be careful the comments that you get may not be always gentle, but are always honest. Parents News The Parents News Website is just that, keeping up to date with anything that may affect you as a parent, or your child. It’s informative, up-to-date and quick to report stories and news items, whether it’s a change in the top boys name or a new legislation Clothing /Equipment sites As any parent knows, or soon to be parent will find out, you will need a great deal of equipment to keep your child happy. They also grow very quickly so be prepared to search the web in search of lovely children’s clothing.
