Hypnosis has become a mainstream way to correct bad habits. Some like to use self-change hypnosis, but many prefer working with a facilitator who guides them through the process. Either way, hypnosis power of your mind is often a revelation that amazes you to discover how powerful you are.

For me, my bad habit was the granddaddy of them all: quitting smoking cigarettes. I had smoked a pack a day for more tha
18 years. Of course, everyone is deluged with medical information that cigarettes will eventually kill you. I'm not sure why that alone didn't particularly make me want to quit. The medical community isn't either.

But I started taking a lot of heat from my husband, who had quit, and my five-year old son. I was thinking about it. And by accident, if there are such things, I made a connection with a nice guy at a lake boat party. We walked out on the lake's deck, and I smoked a cigarette while we talked. I expressed that I would like to quit smoking.

Very calmly, he asked "Do you really want to quit?" Somewhat reluctantly, since I really liked smoking cigarettes, I said yes. He then went on to say that if I really wanted to quit, he would help me. I had no idea what that meant. But he said he would come to my home once a week, and, using hypnosis, he would help me quit.

Of course, I had heard of hypnosis, but I had not idea what he was going to do. I'm often very open to new ideas, and I have some sad stories to tell on that. But, since he was coming to my home, I couldn't think of a reason not to do it. He explained that since he simply did this to help people, he didn't accept money. But he did insist on a gift. Whatever I wanted to give.

I honestly think concentrating on what gift to give kept me on track. My therapist's name is Bob Trotter. He also became one of my dearest friends.

The first time Bob came to my home, he had me fill out a questionnaire on sex. I thought that was odd. But he explained that it helped him to know how to couch directives in hypnosis, how I accepted suggestions. He then set up the parameters for the program.

This first week, he said I was to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day. The key was: I had to smoke each cigarette completely before I went to bed. I remember feverishly smoking each cigarette sitting before the TV to complete my assignment. Then I had to change my brand of cigarettes. I had to go to a tobacconist shop and purchase pure cigarettes with no filters.

The next week, I was to smoke one pack of these cigarettes completely each day. And that was hard. If I was smoking and walked into a store, I had to stub out the cigarette and put it back in my box to finish later. The purpose here, as he later explained, is these cigarettes were pure tobacco with no sugar. No sugar! That, it seems, is one of the keys to the addiction. It's as much sugar as it is nicotine.

And something else: I was to share these cigarettes with no one. I actually remember a guy I worked with who want to try one, and I told him no. He was completely surprised I wouldn't allow him to smoke one. I explained, but he was absolutely aghast.

Each week I was told to cut the cigarettes in half.
One pack, ½ pack, ¼ pack etc.

Without a doubt, this was not just self-change hypnosis, or hypnosis mind change, this was discipline.
This was pure hypnosis power of your mind. Of course, at this point, I thought it was totally Bob. But I came to understand that I was the power.

The last week I was smoking 2 ½ of the pure tobacco cigarettes. I knew I was getting to the end of the process, and I was beginning to panic. What would I do when I quit? How would I drink coffee or scotch or talk on the telephone?

These were true conce
s. I was putting out all the reasons why I shouldn't stop immediately. I should give myself one more week. Bob said no. "You're really not smoking much now, and I'll give you suggestions that will make it totally easy."

First, he suggested that if I felt I wanted a cigarette, I should have a glass of water. That would keep me from putting on any more weight. That eased my mind, and we went into the last hypnosis session. I remember it so vividly.

As usual, he guided me down the path into a beautiful, serene garden. He took me deeper and deeper. Then he took me to a hallway. He told me that behind the door were all the cigarettes I had ever smoked. He had me open the door and breathe in the disgusting smells. I then closed the door.

He told me that this represented my past. I used to smoke. He then had me nail the door shut and then cover the door in bricks. At the end of the hypnosis session, he told me I would only see smoking as something in my past. I no longer smoked.

When I came out, I felt absolute at that moment that I had quit smoking. But I was conce
ed that I would become another statistic of the relapsed smoker. So, I simply took it one day at a time. That was in the fall so winter was coming shortly. And, I realized that one of the strongest reasons I wanted to quit that I hadn't expressed, was because I was going to buy a mink jacket. I didn't want to ruin it with cigarette smoke.

I now think that was probably the best reason of all to embark on my hypnosis mind change. The jacket has never been near a smoking cigarette. It is as fresh and beautiful as the day I walked out of the fur salon.

The nice thing is that was 30 years ago. From that day, I have never smoked another cigarette, and I have a beautiful fur jacket that looks brand new. The interesting thing, too, is my husband is now my ex-husband and went back to smoking. My 35-year-old son smokes. Neither one could ever understand that I had discovered more than quitting smoking, I had discovered hypnosis power of your mind.

Unfortunately, it took me another 25 years to put the same hypnosis mind change to work for me in weight loss. I recommended Bob's technique to friends who wanted to quit smoking, and they did with the same successful process.

Interestingly, I don't ever remember hearing that sugar is part of the nicotine addiction. But maybe it's because this amazing work led me to more incredible things when I began studying meditation. The overwhelming power of your mind is absolutely self-empowering.

I don't remember what gift I gave Bob. But I'll never forget him or how he led me to the world of hypnosis mind change.
