Yoga in Goa: yoga in an endless summer! If you're looking to start your yoga journey in India this summer, we’ve got you covered with some essentials and things to think about. Goa is a beautiful destination for some summer yoga classes – you’ve got the sun, the sea, the sand, and the (almost year round) summer vibes. As a holiday destination and one of India’s most prolific yoga destinations, Goa is perfect the perfect place to start to your yogic journey.
First, (and maybe it’s an obvious one) consider what summer season you’re heading into or leaving behind! Summer for those of us in Europe and the Americas is June to August, but this is not a great time to visit Goa as you’ll be right in the middle of monsoon season. The monsoon in Goa typically lasts from May to September, and a lot of businesses – including yoga schools, cafes, and bars – on the beach and in Goa will close down during this time. But if you come to Goa at any other time of the year (October through to May) you will be guaranteed the summer vibes you’re searching for. The busiest season in Goa is easily the Christmas period, so that’s something to consider when you’re planning your summer yoga in India. If you want a bit more of a buzz with night life and people, it’s as great time to come. But if you want a quieter time for your yoga journey, maybe consider coming in November or March.
Then, consider what type of yoga experience you’re after. Yoga in Goa is very popular and the styles vary from school to school, giving you an abundance of choice when it comes to you and your practice. Do you want to push yourself and your body with some strict Ashtanga Primary Series? Maybe shed a few pounds and improve your flexibility and strength. Or do you want a more introspective and relaxed yoga journey? Time to consider what's important to you, time to reflect; if so, you’ll be better off with some Yin.
Next, how much time do you want to spend on your yoga practice in summer? Maybe a one or two week retreat, holiday, or course would suffice. Or maybe you can afford the time to spend one or two months practicing. As we mentioned, the Goan summer allows for almost eight months of sun and sea, so your only confines in this respect will be your own time freedom and budget.
Our advice? Go with your gut, and choose what feels right for you. Starting is often the hardest step, but once you get the ball rolling and set off on your yoga journey you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner!
