People who exercise self-reliance are self-starters. They begin each day with a plan of action prepared the night before. They have set their goals and objectives. Their attitudes are generated by initiative and motivated by a heat of passion to win.

By Contrast: A procrastinator offers excuses, complaints and rationalization for inactivity. Does that suggest procrastinators go through life without dreams and a passion to win? The difference lies in limiting thought patterns. The nature of self-starters is in their thinking. They have a level of confidence in actively pursuing new interests and activities thinking only of the good that can come. They possess high self-esteem and believe they can do anything -- and they are right. When setting goals, they stretch and challenge themselves to fulfill their dreams in life. To the self-starter, the goal is the journey.

"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude." W.W. Ziege.

Here are five ways to begin the journey of a self-starter:

1. Remove negative ideas and thoughts. Our thought patterns, being largely habitual, tend to perpetuate themselves if not dealt with swiftly. Negative patterns of thought cause undesirable experience and are generally rooted deeply in our subconscious. The subconscious can be changed by conscious intention. Start by visualizing and using positive self-talk to reprogram the necessary thinking to become a self-starter.

2. Learn a lesson from the masters on overcoming adversity. Maintain an attitude and relentless drive to win. Shift your thinking from feeling inadequate or bad to what you can do to feel powerful and perform better. Donald Trump worked through adversity when forced to give up several large properties and sell off his private jet and yacht. Trump said, "I was really in deep trouble. I had to work harder or fail. If you are very smart, and if you are very tough and tenacious, then you will survive."

3. Make a list of past accomplishments and achievements regardless of the size. Think and revisit in your mind the steps that led to those successes, and see yourself applying the attitudes and thoughts for stretching your goals for greater successes now and in the future.

4. Life is not a do-it-yourself project. Guard your self-esteem carefully. Surround yourself with associates and friends that will give support in your personal and business growth. You want to be with people that will celebrate your achievements instead of belittling them.

5. Honor yourself by taking advantage of the talents you possess. Actively pursue new interests and activities with passion to show yourself how much you can accomplish. Desire, belief, imagination and a willingness to change makes all things happen. nnn
