Written by Alfred Benelli, CFP, FIC, Financial Planning AssocnnI recently came across some comments submitted to a man-in-the-street, public opinion survey done way back in the 1950’s. Think things are tough today? Here are some of the actual complaints about our economy that were bugging our parents and grandparents… Enjoy!nn“If things keep going the way they are, it’ll be impossible to buy a week's groceries for less than $20.00.nn'Have you seen the new car prices this year? It won't be long before $2,000 will only get you a used one. nn'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is totally ridiculous. nn'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a lousy letter?' nn'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, we won’t be able to hire any outside help at the store.' nn'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon.' It’s enough to make me want to leave the car in the garage.nn'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year… just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.'nn'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I read somewhere that a few married women are even having to work outside the home just to make ends meet.' nn'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both go to work.' nn'I'm afraid that Volkswagen car is just going to open the door to a whole bunch of other foreign car business.' nn'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half my income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to Congress.' nn'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.' nn'No one can afford to be sick anymore. At $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood. Somebody needs to fix the medical system.’nn'If they think I'll pay more than 50 cents for a hair cut, they got another thing coming.' nn'If we ever lose sight of the fact that we are “One Nation Under God”, then we will likely become one nation gone under.
