Rheumatoid arthritis is a medical disorder that affects the joints. While this condition may manifest itself at any age, it is most common in women under the age bracket of 40 to 50 years old. Arthritis is a debilitating autoimmune disorder. Under normal conditions, the white blood cells act on pathogenic microorganisms. If a person develops this autoimmune disorder, the white blood cells invade the membrane of the joints which leads to the release of protein components and inflammation and thickening of the affected joints. Bare Facts about Rheumatoid Arthritis There are 3 women with this condition in every man who is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to this, women are more likely to suffer from the more severe form of the medical condition than men. This can be gleaned from the results of the research published in a recent issue of the Journal Arthritis Research. This condition is not age-specific, although a considerable number of cases are reported at the ages of 40 to 50 years old. In the past, medical experts believed that the condition is somewhat related to genetics. However, subsequent scientific studies have debunked this earlier belief and concluded that the condition is more likely to be related to age and sex than genetics. Predisposition to the Painful and Debilitating Condition While genetics has been eliminated in the range of causative variables for such autoimmune disorder, it is still essential for us not to discount the potential link of the hereditary variables as a predisposing condition for rheumatoid arthritis. Still, we need to understand the fact that the siblings and not the children are prone to developing this medical condition. In addition to this, heavy smokers have the higher risk of developing this autoimmune disorder than non-smokers. Various scientific studies have also established a strong relationship between the early incidence of the condition and the number of cigarettes that is consumed on a daily basis. Proper Management of the Medical Condition There are no known cures for this autoimmune disease and treatment modalities generally focus on the alleviation of inflammation as well as other symptoms associated with the medical condition. Typical medications for rheumatoid arthritis include immuno-suppressants, NSAIDs and steroidal medications. Medical intervention during the early stages of the condition is extremely important if you want to obtain significant results or improvement. Some medical practitioners subscribe to a more aggressive treatment approach in order to preserve normal bodily functions and prevent further aggravation of the condition which can lead to disability in the more severe cases of the disorder.
