Everyone always anticipates a new year, but if you are unprepared or not prepared at all, how can you utilize your fresh start? Goals are important both personally and professionally, with them you can navigate new territory or approach the new year with more confidence and assurance.

What are the best ways to set goals?

1. Blast from the Past

In order to know where you want to take your company, you should have a good idea of what you have already tried. You really have two dominate choices here, do you want to avoid old mistakes or breathe new life into your company with new choices, focusing on what could be? This is the starting point for your coveted goal list.

2. Specific

Think of your goals as a map, a GPS for the year ahead. What exactly do you want your company to achieve this year? Where do you want to focus to be? Be specific about your goals or vision for the upcoming year, the more detailed and specific that your goal map is, the more likely you are to achieve what you have set forth.

3. Uniformity

Assure that your goals are in alignment with your company values and purpose, if not you need to adjust one. Uniformity is important because creates trust and reassurance among your employees, customers and suppliers at unconscious levels, levels we will not be discussing here. Make you company and the new goals blend.

4. Measurable

In order to know if you’ve chosen the right goals and if they have been achieved, you need to be able to measure them, either by a standard (eg customer service cards) or by numbers (eg financial statements or reports). This is important because it will make your job easier next goal setting session, as it will pinpoint what worked and what may need some tweaking.

5. Personal and Organizational

Every one of your employees, including yourself should have at least one attainable goal for the new year and they should meld with your company goals. This will create motivation and unity both on a personal level and a professional level. We all like to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, create these goals with this in mind.

6. Communication

Communication is the fabric that will hold your company together, through dark waters and success. Everyone should be on board with the new goals, whether they are directly or indirectly affected by them. This will achieve greater impact with the goals you have set, get everyone on board. Communicate, communicate, communicate!

Goals bring unity among you and your employees.
