Snoring is such a common sleep disorder that you could find a snorer, looking out for effective snoring remedies almost everywhere. Though there is no dearth of snoring remedies, there seems to be no end to the search for the right therapy option – as many of the remedies that you find on the internet and elsewhere seem to fail with most people. The first thing you need to remember is that there may not be anything wrong with the snoring remedies but the real problem lies with people who are putting them to practice without even looking at the cause of snoring. It is no wonder that most therapies fail to yield desired results – as causes of snoring are as varied as the sufferers themselves. Snoring and deviated septum: the most likely cause Did you ever wonder why you snore? Of course, snoring could be a result of a simple cold or allergy or a nasal congestion, but there could also be various types of anatomical defects inside your nasal cavity that could result in snoring. Deviated septum and snoring is such a situation where the central dividing line within the nasal cavity, the septum, is tilted or deviated on one side. This makes one nostril narrower than the other, forcing the individual to breathe through the mouth. For mouth breathers, the tissues of soft palate and uvula may get relaxed, collapse and vibrate, while asleep. The noise of this vibration is snoring. This is truly how snoring starts and deviated septum is one of the most common causes of snoring. How to stop snoring when deviated septum is the cause? Now that you have pinpointed the actual cause of your snoring, it is time to think how to stop snoring, keeping snoring and deviated septum in mind. There are two types of snoring remedies when the cause is identified as having deviated septum. Let us discuss the options: • Surgical option as one of the snoring remedies: though the normal procedure for treating snoring is first to try out non-surgical methods, depending on the severity of your condition, the location and degree of deviation of the deviated septum the doctor may recommend surgery. The surgery of choice to treat habitual snoring is called somnoplasty procedure. Somnoplasty procedure uses the radiofrequency tissue ablation (RFTA) technology which essentially means removing or repairing extra and superfluous tissues blocking the air passage inside the nose. In the process the ENT surgeon also repositions and readjusts the deviated septum as well. The procedure involves using a pre-heated electrode to burn and scar the relevant tissues in order to remove the obstruction. One of the least invasive surgical procedures, the somnoplasty procedure has high success rate after 3 to 5 treatment sessions. • Snoring remedies – non-surgical option: this includes quick weight loss, abstinence from alcohol, changing sleeping posture and using specially designed anti-snoring pillows that aims to improve the alignment of head, neck, shoulders and spine during sleep. There are several brands of anti-snoring pillows available and could be very effective alternatives to anti-snoring devices like CPAP machines, jaw advancement devices, etc.
