Spring cleaning is a biological urge to make way for the new (season) and if you act upon that urge a cleaner office space shall emerge and your life will be content once again. Whether it is an old friendship that has outlived its expiry date or those pile of papers on your desk that no longer serve any value, clearing it away will clear your mind and bring about a more productive and peaceful day, how can you most effectively clear it away?:
1. How Clean do You Want it?
This starting point is often overlooked, until that pivotal time when you are standing in the middle of the biggest task you could have developed for yourself and your office team and you’re thinking unkind words in your mind as you look around at what was supposed to be spring cleaning is now the biggest mess you have ever seen. Oops. Before you take on this daunting task, ask yourself how clean do I want our office to be? If you do a thorough cleaning once a year already, you already have a good idea, but for you newbies you need to devise a map for the road ahead. You have an idea? Good, let’s move forward and you can choose the steps you want to do. (Unless you are tired after reading this, then maybe you need to hire a janitorial service for this. Hint, hint)
2. Everyone For Themselves
Team work is fantastic, but when it comes to spring cleaning have everyone clean their own individual work spaces as this will save time when certain important papers have gone missing or that “thing” they ALWAYS use is no longer where it should be and so forth.
3. Desk Personnel
For your office people, have each of them begin by removing old papers that no longer serve their intended purpose or re-file the ones that have value but are no longer relevant. Remove all items from their desk, dusting and sanitizing their desk space and doing the same as they replace their desk items. This will give everyone an oppotunity to reorganize their desks and toss old items not being used. Computer, keyboards, printers, phones ALL must be wiped down and (preferably) sanitized from its winter build up.
4. Warehouse Peeps
Have your warehouse team throw away old unused items that are taking up valuable storage space. Have them wipe down the shelving and anything with a 2 inch black dirt build up. The warehouse is often overlooked for cleaning, but you also have employees and (possibly) customers going back there and it is important to have this area cleaned too.
5. Everyone Unite
Bookshelves, showroom shelves/items and any other areas in your business are to be wiped down with a damp cloth or dusted as is appropriate.
Spring is a beautiful time of the year, why not make your business more beautiful as well. Spring cleaning can have transformative effects on our psyche and make us feel ready to take on new challenges once the old has been tossed.
