Recession is bad enough but it’s lethal when it’s coupled with the holidays. Holidays are one of the most expensive times of the year, with food, gifts and trips lining up to make your wallet scream for cash. It’s bad enough that this time of year cannot help but be expensive but there are also people and schemes that are bound to get rid of your cash more than what is necessary. So, this season does not only call for hope and joy, but also for us to be smart shoppers. Again, information is the key and this is what this article is offering you. Draw Up A Shopping Plan and Prioritize This is the basic first step. Finances, as we’ve experienced aren’t all that great lately so it is best to know where our limits are. Once again, we should sit down and do the math and realistically plan things so that we can survive to live past all the joy we’re going to give and receive during the holidays. Planning maybe overrated but it’s worth a lot. Also, learn to give priority to more important things. It would be all right to go a little cheap for the holidays as long as your family gets to eat the morning after. Beware of Shopping Scams When we see the word ‘sale’, our mind goes on overdrive, calculating and imagining how much money we would be saving if we just run in there and purchase things. Since it’s the holidays, this is a word that we’ll see plastered all over the malls and even all over the Internet. Learn to discern if these sale deals are really there to for you to save money or to spend some more. Usually, the low prices are designed to pressure you into buying more. Also, some of these sales also give out low-quality items. Especially if what you purchased is supposed to be functional and durable, it is just not worth it. Again, information is the key. Find out what exactly they are selling, how they’re selling and if it’s all good, beat the crowd to it! Extra Weight for Appliances and Gadgets Another shopping scam that you might have the misfortune to experience is buying gadgets and appliances with extended but unnecessary warranties. How would this affect the price? Mostly, warranties are part of what you pay for and are a waste if you are originally entitled to them even without the extra cash. For this, it is good to know that while warranties are excellent additions to the product, most gadgets are built durably. Extended warranties are essentially deadweight in your finances. The same may be said about return fees. Most gadgets and appliances may actually be returned once. The customer is entitled to this to ensure that the shop does not pass old and defective items as new items. Moreover, if you really do want to return it, some shops already have a return policy. Always be informed when purchasing gadgets and appliances because these are products that rely on quality and durability. However, these are all cautionary ad hoc tips, the cardinal rule for this is that, if you don’t want the product, don’t open the box. GP
