High productivity employees are an employer’s dream. They are an asset to the organization, and can sometimes be the best reason to run a business. Which organization does not like to have high-productivity employees?
However, high productivity comes with a few unique challenges and drawbacks. It is generally true that high productivity employees are not extraordinary in terms of talent.What they lack in talent; they make upwith a killer attitude. The go-getters are usually less gifted in terms of talent, much like how champion sportsmen are great at outlook rather than at the game itself.
This is why, when HR tries to retain them, it has to work on these areas. These people, especially when they are fully aware of their abilities and worth; have enough reason to feel important, since they are usually much sought after. In such instances, it becomes all the more important and, at the same time, difficult for HR to keep them in.
These are some of the ways in which high productivity employees can be retained by an organization:
Kill monotonyr
Usually, high productivity people are fueled by challenge. Since it is generally attitude and very rarely ability alone that makes high productivity employees; giving them variety at work can go a long way in keeping them in the organization. It is likely that the more the chances and opportunities such employees are given to grow, the greater will be the value they attach to their employer.
Allow them to experimentr
This is one of the prime reasons for which high-productivity people remain in an organization. Most successful people have one trait in common –they love to experiment. Even before average people get an inkling of an idea, the high-productivity ones jump into it and start acting on it as if there were no tomorrow. This can be of immense value to the organization; likewise, it also instills a sense of loyalty in the person who is given the opportunity to try out new things.
Praise their effortsr
Many high performance employees are silent workers. They know what is to be done and go about it without expecting to be eulogized for their work. Yet, recognition for good work is a very essential human need. A word of praise, without it sounding artificial or done with an ulterior motive, is a means for fostering employee fidelity to the organization.
Reward extra productivityr
While praising high productivity is one aspect of recognition, people value a concrete reward. Something like a surprise pay hike or a high end car can be a great way to keep high productivity in the organization.
Allow them to live their lifer
As we saw in the beginning, high-productivity people are not from the heavens. They are like you and me, except in terms of the mindset. So, they too need recharging every now and then. They are entitled to their occasional time off with the family, for instance. Give them the opportunity to go for a paid holiday to a place they like visiting. Once they come back refreshed, they will be back in their zones soon. The bottom line is that kickass performers need to be retained, and HR has to try every trick in its bag to keep them for the organization’s good.
