It is known as methylenedioxymethamphetamine, MDMA, X, E, XTC and the love drug, but its most common name is Ecstasy. This dangerous drug is a manufactured substance, containing a variety of ingredients including cocaine, PCP, caffeine and cough syrup. A hallucinogenic, Ecstasy has become a popular club drug.
How It Is Used
Ecstasy is taken in pill, tablet or capsule form and is most often taken in multiple amounts at once, which is also known as rolling or bumping. Most pills are identified with a cartoon character. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reported in 2012 that the number of individuals who use Ecstasy had declined in the last decade by nearly six percent, however there are still a significant number of individuals who abuse the drug, most of whom are between the ages of 17 and 35.
Effects of Abuse
There are no scientific indications that Ecstasy is physically addictive; however there are reasons to believe that long term abuse, especially in increased amounts can create a psychological addiction. Ecstasy can stay in the system for up to six hours and is active withi
15 minutes but the full euphoric sensation is experienced after 45 minutes.
Signs and Symptoms
Individuals who abuse Ecstasy may experience:
• Increased heart rate
• Increased blood pressure
• Enhanced sense of touch
• Hyperactivity
• Chills and sweating
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Anxiety and agitation
• Depression and sadness
Other Side Effects from Abuse
One of the more dangerous side effects from abuse is dehydration. The drug can interfere with the body’s natural thermostat and prevent it from cooling internally and as a result the body can overheat. This dangerous side effect has led to cases of hyperthermia, caused kidney and heart damage, heart attack, seizures and may be fatal.
Ecstasy abuse among adolescents is especially harmful because it can hinder the physical and psychological changes that occur between the ages of 12 and 20. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the drug was also a contributing factor in causing brain damage that occurred as many as seven years after abuse was stopped. The study conducted by the NIDA showed that although the damage repaired itself over time, neuron damage was consistent.
Help Is Available
It may be necessary for an individual who wants to stop using Ecstasy to enter a recovery program that will offer support and encouragement. There are a number of programs that can help including 12 steps programs, holistic programs and educational programs, which will help the individual focus on overcoming the urge to return to Ecstasy use.
