When it comes to personal success, I think you'll agree the personal development industry has made huge progress over the last decade. Self help techniques are abundant and the information being published on success is growing larger by the day. However, when it comes to your own personal success, there's one aspect - above all others - that must be understood before any significant change can ever be made. Before I tell you what it is, let me ask you a simple question first. Do you ever feel like a part of you wants something and another part doesn't? I'm sure you have. Anyone trying to undergo worthwhile change in their life runs into this problem. Yet, instead of trying to understand "why" this happens, most programs focus on helping you "push" through your own resistance. They teach how to "feel the fear and act anyway" or "ignore your emotions and just press on." Now, don't get me wrong, I think those that's all valuable advice. But I still feel like there's a better way. You see, that part of you that is resisting change is called your internal map of reality - oftentimes referred to as the "ego." The ego was formed - in most part - when you were young between the ages of 2-7 depending on which psychologist you ask. The irony is, your ego was constructed without much input on your part. Your primary caregivers are the ones mainly responsible for developing your ego. So what does all this have to do with personal success? I'm glad you asked. You see, your ego was constructed in a way that allowed you (the keyword being "allowed") to experience the greatest amount of safety when you were growing up. You very creatively responded to your environment to create an internal map of reality that kept you safe in the world. The problem is you are no longer young. You are grown up and want to make things happen for yourself. However, your ego pushes back when you try to make worthwhile change. It doesn't want to change because it thinks that making change is unsafe. You feel this resistance in the form of negative emotions or physical stresses. This is what I'm calling the greatest personal success discovery in history. Why? Well, it tells us the root cause as to why change is so difficult. All of your belief systems and emotions are structured in a way to keep you SAFE. When you try and change them, they fight back. And trust me, they fight hard. It's a battle difficult to win. The good news is, now that you know the cause of resistance, you can work to change that resistance. How? Well, for starters, it makes sense that if "safety" is what the ego is concerned with maintaining, we should find a way to convince it that the change we want to make is "safe." There are several different methods you can use to do this and it would take entire books to cover each one of them. For now, I recommend that anytime you work to change any part of yourself, you find a method that helps you convince your ego that the change you want to make is safe. If you can convince yourself that the change you want to make or the actions you want to take are safe, you'll be amazed at how quickly your subconscious mind will work to make it happen for you.
