Montessori education first commenced in 1907 when Maria Montessori’s very first school, the “Casa dei Bambini” was established, which was a part of an enterprising project known as the urban renewal project in effect in a really low-income district of Rome. The success of the Montessori school resounded through the length and breadth of Italy. Following this success, Montessori schools were soon opened in Milan and Rome. Two years later, in 1909, Maria Montessori published her seminal book, “Il Metodo Della Pedagogia Scientifica applicato all’educazione infantile nelle Case dei Bambini”— which when translated into English signifies the Montessori Method. Dr. Maria Montessori was one of the most famous Italian pedagogues apart from being a physician and an innovator and is today hailed as the creator of “The Montessori Method of Education”. She based this new system of education on her observations conducted in a scientific manner on young children and their behavioral patterns. Dr.Montessori was the first ever woman physician to have graduated from the University of Rome. She then became engaged to a doctor treating those children who were labeled as abnormal or retarded. It was at this time, that is around 1907, that Dr. Montessori was invited by the urban renewal project, to open a facility involving a child care center for the children, especially those who belonged to extremely poor families in these low-income districts of Rome. Dr. Montessori’ school,“ Casa dei Bambini” or when translated in English, “A Children’s House,” was one of its kind. The programs in the school were on her scientific observations that 1.
