Seeing isn't believing. Believing is seeing.” Elf Judy – The Santa Clause
If you’re like the vast majority of the people, you live in a WYSIWYG world! If you’re not familiar with the acronym – WYSIWYG (pronounced – Wizzy-Wig) it stands for “What You See Is What You Get”. I’m here to let you in on a little secret. There is a Land beyond WYSIWYG – just the other side of reality - where all things are possible! Are you interested in finding out how to get there?
First, let me tell you a story, it starts with a man named Elias. Elias was a serious man born in the mid 1800s. He was strict and unimaginative, but he was a man of integrity – honest, compassionate and a hard worker. Not bad traits, especially for the time period. But this man almost deprived the earth of one of the greatest treasures it has ever known.
Elias had a son, whose head was in the clouds, and he was displeased with his comic antics, so one day he told his son he had a job for him in a jelly factor and it paid twenty-five dollars a week. Pretty good pay at that time.
The son told his father, “I want to be an artist; I don’t want to work in a jelly factory!” Of course father Elias told him that artists can’t make a living and he needed to get a real job!
If Walter Elias Disney would have listened to the fact based-seriousness of his father, he would have buried his talent and been a plant worker in a jelly factory.
A Jelly factory!
No Mickey Mouse, no Jiminy Cricket, no Magic Kingdoms and no Imagineers!
No Disney Magic!
Elias lived in WYSIWYG, just like everyone else. Walter knew there was a Land beyond WYSIWYG and he had every intention of going there, and boy, did he go there!
In this quote, Walt Disney sums up the secret - the secret to making dreams come true - living in a land beyond…
“This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C's. They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy and the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably."
Let’s look at these four secret keys to assist you to go to your own Land beyond WYSIWYG.
Curiosity – Never losing your ability to be child-like. Asking, “What if…?” and blowing the doors off the possibilities. This is tapping into your imagination. Stick your head in the clouds once in a while; it will take you beyond the boundaries of what others say is achievable.
Confidence – Total belief that if you can dream it, you can do it, trusting that all things are truly possible. Never allow doubt and uncertainty to gain a stronghold in your mind. Be confident and take a giant leap away from the crowd.
Courage – Having the guts to face doubters, critics, hecklers from WYSIWYG! Daring to do something that has never been done, and having a willingness to fail or soar. It takes courage to step out into the great unknown.
Constancy – Being single-minded and faithful to who you are and what you are doing. Keep going right past the limitations of WYSIWYG!
Walt has taught us how to use our imagination, so imagine for a moment a world without anything Disney…
…and a history that would have merely mentioned a man that lived in the 1900s named Walter Elias Disney that worked in a jelly factory in the land of WYSIWYG…
What about you? Are you burying an awesome talent in your own form of a ‘jelly factory’?
Just in case you didn’t know, according to Walt…
“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible!”
