A local paper, as the name suggests, covers local news and happenings of interest within a smaller community, making it more relevant and interesting for the reader. With increasing globalization, a number of national newspapers cover every aspect of political, social, and cultural life across many countries. In doing so, they often end up missing out on essential day-to-day happenings in their neighborhood. Local robberies go unreported, local crime-related incidents are sidelined, if covered, and many a time, the reader has little real interest. Fallout of this national news phenomenon is that local advertisers find it exorbitant to advertise their wares and services. This is where a Local News Paper fills the gaps very nicely. By virtue of being weekly, it has enough events to cover, while its Local Weekly Papeer tag allows it to go into depths that wider circulation paper will not be able to. A large number of people are opting for one local paper or the other, as it contains items of real interest and value to their lives. Live debates on current issues, event planners for concerts, gigs, and other types of entertainment or just neighborhood news are all that a weekly local paper can boast. No other paper has the bandwidth to get into every town and locality and give readers in-depth information without diluting their core national news agenda. Many newspapers have adopted the local paper strategy by introducing a weekly or fortnightly supplement to their regular editions. So while the main paper will be of general interest, the ad on the supplementary page will talk about schools, fairs, events, and happenings of value to the smaller community. While this is better than having no local paper at all, these papers often lack the necessary focus as their best competencies are employed elsewhere. The supplement appears to be more of an afterthought, an amateur attempt to fill in the gaps or tick in the box approach more than a concerted effort to cover news. As against this approach, a local weekly has nothing else to cover except community news, and therefore, it performs far better. It provides more serious commentary on the state of affairs - both cultural and political. It also has the time and focus to research what people need to know and invests in just that. It also sanctimoniously covers local advertisers, thereby providing valuable vendor information for the readers. 'Glocal' is the new buzzword. Even the corporate people are trying to reach out to countries and people in their languages and customs. Why should news services be behind? While people want to know what is happening across the globe, they always have a keen interest in what is happening in their country. In some ways, a local paper brings news of greater importance than a global or national one. People need to know news in real time so that they can act on it immediately.
