I want to share with you a model that shows you exactly when you are about to revert back to safety and comfort – instead of pushing through to your dreams!

This is one of the most profound things I have ever learned. When I first heard it, I don’t think I understood just how meaningful it really was. Now that I've been able to help coaching clients apply it to their situations, I get just how life-changing this concept can be.

Many people struggle with being, well, stuck! Year after year, not much changes even though they really want change, they make plans for the change and they even take some action in the direction of the change that they want.

So why is it that most (80% or more) don’t get the results they want?

It is because the 20% do something different – whether they know it or not! And I’m going to tell you exactly what they do but first, I must give you some background information.

Research shows that the conscious mind controls only 2 to 4% of our behavior – while our subconscious mind controls 96-98% of our behavior.

Our conscious mind is where we make choices, such as deciding to pursue a goal or develop a new habit.

Our subconscious mind is where all of our past programming and any negative beliefs are held, such as “I’m not worthy”, “I always mess up,” or “Who do I think I am?”

So when you decide to tackle a new goal or create a new habit, you have to get this new idea into your subconscious mind for it to really take root. The problem is it is fighting all your old, non-supportive beliefs about yourself.

You decide with the 4% that is within your control, “This year I’m going to make six-figures!” Yet the 96% that isn't within your control says, “What are you thinking? You don’t know enough. No one is going to pay you that much. And if you do make it, you’ll just blow it because you’re bad with money.”

When you begin to enact this new behavior that will move you closer to your goal (let’s just say you decide you’re going to make more prospecting calls for your business), this new behavior confronts all your subconscious limiting beliefs. So instead of this new behavior getting into the subconscious (where it can take root and become habitual or automatic) the subconscious rejects the new behavior. And remember, the subconscious mind is much more powerful than the conscious mind.

You will know exactly when your subconscious is rejecting the new behavior because something will happen – something to stop you in your tracks!

A family member will get sick, someone will withdraw their support, you will get offered a great paying J.O.B., or your car will break down. I’m not kidding. The circumstances that happen when someone is about to cross the threshold to success is amazing!

What happens next is very predictable. As soon as these circumstance happen (even seemingly good circumstances) we will start to feel fear, doubt and worry about our decision to move forward toward our six-figure revenue goal.

Next, we start to rationalize (tell our self rational lies) our situation. “Well, I can hardly work longer hours on my business now that my daughter can’t go to preschool anymore” or “My husband lost his job so I have to keep my job for the health insurance.”

These lies sound so rational – we really believe them! And if anyone questions whether they are true – watch out! We will defend them to the death.

Of course, since we’re not really happy with ourselves for stopping our pursuit of our goal, the next step is to look for something outside yourself to blame. “That darn preschool closed due to bad management” or “The economy is so bad my husband lost his job.”

At this point, you can be sure that you’re old programming has kicked in. The same self-sabotaging beliefs that have kept you stuck for years.
