To be effective, training does not have to be expensive. Picking the correct training is the key. It's just that simple. Ah, but the question is what "is" the right training? Must you send someone to a seminar to hear "the speaker of the week?" to get high quality training? Or, must you pay five-hundred to more than fifteen-hundred dollars for training DVDs that dance, sing, spin, flip, and rotate and an hour later you wonder what you have learned? The answer is no! There are three basic rules to follow in selecting training that will work and will fit your budget. First know what you want. Sounds simple but for many it is extremely difficult. Sit down and decide what you need and why. Is someone having trouble writing? Well you may need a good writing program. But wait, why are they having trouble writing? Is English their "second" language? If so, you may need a language program rather than a business writing program. Another example: If someone is having difficulty getting things done do you need a time management program or a program on procrastination? Know what type of program you need before you buy it. Second, what is your budget? And remember, you don't have to pay lots of money to get high quality. Look on the internet for high quality programs that you can get on a reasonable budget. Ask your peers what programs they are using; how they are working for them, and what they are paying. Then decide if these training programs will work for you and at the same time fit your budget. And third, decide what medium you want to use. Do you still use videocassettes(they will soon be gone from the marketplace)? Do you use DVDs or CDs? Do you have your own Learning Management System(LMS) and so you need the right to be able to "stream" the training materials? Or do you want to subscribe to an LMS and have the materials hosted by someone else? These questions sound simple and they really are. However, the answers may be the difference between people learning and understanding valuable material or wondering two hours after the training what they "really" learned!
