Using HTTPS To Increase Your Online Security
Everyone should be conscious of their online security. As almost everything is possible on the internet, danger and fraud aren't any exception. What? You didn't know that being online can put you in danger? It can! And the more you become aware of this fact, the more you can protect yourself. As it's almost inevitable not to use the computer these days, the best thing to do is just be on your guard at all times. In this article, we will talk about one of the ways on how you can be more secure when surfing the net.
Many popular online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail may have already asked you sometime in the past whether you wished to activate "https." Since like others, you didn't exactly know what it was so you just ignored the offer. But, what exactly is https?
You may already be familiar with "http" (hypertext transfer protocol) which is a common acronym you can find in most website addresses that you go to. This is a protocol utilized for transferring sites from one server to your browser. Http has been around for many years and has not significantly changed from the beginning. Make sure that you don't mistake it with "Html" as the latter is the language used for the web page itself.
Anyhow, when on http mode, all things that you do, such as discussions and transactions between you and your browser (Chrome, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, etc.) are transpiring in a clear text. Meaning, there is no protection or online security that is guaranteed. If someone wishes to tap onto your transactions, he or she can freely do so and see what exactly is happening.
Now, to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of being snooped at, you can make use of https. Https stands for hypertext transfer protocol with secure sockets layer. It's a very handy connection as it ensures that all the transactions between you and your browser will be encrypted. If anyone would like to spy on you, he or she will have to decrypt these transactions, which, as you may have an idea, can be a daunting task. The https protocol can secure your credentials and ensure that no man-in-the-middle can take and use them.
The downside of the story is that there is no on and off button for the https for all the sites you wish to access. You can utilize it on a case-by-case basis, but at least the sites mentioned above as well as other mainstream websites implements its use. Hence, whenever there's opportunity, it is wise to choose the use of https.
Online security is something that every internet user should be very conscious about. There are a lot of cybercriminals out there lurking to find their victims. They are just waiting for you to key-in that credit card number or other personal information and they'll be ready to utilize them in various fraudulent acts. If you want to protect your identity as well as other personal information, using the https protocol is absolutely one of the easiest ways to do it.
