Distillation is a process of separating different components from a mixture. It is a physical process and doesn’t involve a chemical reaction. Distillation is not only about water purification, but it is a general term for purification. In this article, we will discuss the water distillation process. Water distillation is a process of separating impurities from water. It is somehow different from purification, but the aim for both processes is the same. The basic distillation process includes boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a separate, clean container. Water distillation is not a new thing and it has been in practice since the ancient times, only the methods of distillation have changed. Since the process doesn’t involve any chemical reaction, it can be performed at home only. Water that we get from natural sources and tap water is not pure and contains many impurities. Distillation is one of the best methods for water purification. It provides 99% pure water maintaining its original test and qualities. If we talk about a water distiller, the process is as below: Boiling: In the first phase, water is boiled so that the clean water is evaporated as steam and impurities remain within the container. Steam Condensation: Then this steam is collected in a steel container where it is cooled down to form pure water. Final processing: In the last step, water is processed through charcoal filter to remove the remaining impurities from it. Boiling is always being considered the best way for water purification. Distillation is based on this process only. With the use of a water distiller, you won’t need to use separate containers for each process and processing time is also reduced. If we compare the steam distillation with other water purification methods including reverse osmosis and charcoal filter process, we will see that the distillation is much more effective and easy process than the above two. Also, no any other purification method can remove as many impurities from water as distillation process can. Distillation process is targeted to remove organic chemicals including Antibiotics, Fertilizers, Pesticides, Insecticides, Herbicides, Solvents, Growth Hormones, inorganic chemicals including Hard Water Minerals, Phosphorus, Asbestos, Selenium, Sodium, Fluoride, Iron, Lead, Mercury, Barium, Nitrates, Copper, Lead, Chlorine, Arsenic, biological contaminants like Bacteria, Viruses, Chryptosporidium, Chlamydia, Giardia Cysts and radioactive materials including Radium, Strontium 90, Plutonium, etc. Water purification is a very necessary and important process as ground water contains a lot of impurities and chemicals with it. Water distillation is an effective purification process.
