You know that feeling when it seems like you and your partner just can't seem to agree on anything? While this is frustrating in any relationship, it is even more frustrating when you are trying to negotiate and decide how to settle a divorce. When couples can't agree on a few or all of the terms of the divorce, then the divorce becomes contested because one or both people are contesting specific details. Instead of just arguing over the terms for argument's sake, it is important for couples to take the proper steps to resolve their issues and reach an amicable result. Here a few reasons people find themselves in the middle of a contested divorce. We already know that a contested divorce is when both parties know that they are not going to come to an agreement on certain issues, but what are some of the issues that prevent couple from coming to an understanding and settling their terms? For most couple, issues such as custody issues, estate disagreements and unresolved debts are some of the main reasons to have contested divorces. Other reasons include when couples are too angry to sit and talk in a civilized manner and when they find themselves resorting to name calling. However, while these are a few reasons couples usually have contested divorces, the individual reasons depend on each individual couple. Many people call contested divorces a case of the couple being too stubborn and willing to negotiate, however, many people would consent that a contested divorce is a case of both parties standing up for they believe in. It is a good idea to be on your best behavior and hope that there is nothing in your past that will serve as a disadvantage concerning what you should be awarded. However, if you are fighting for custody of your children, but if you've had a history of blowing off your parenting responsibilities, then there is a good chance that it will be difficult for you to convince anyone that you are fit to be a good parent. The same thing goes for finances, if you are fighting for your spouse to take care of a large sum of debt, but the debts were accumulated so you could feed your gambling habit, then you will have a difficult time convincing a court that you should not be held accountable for your actions. During a contested divorce, don't lose sight of what's important to you, and don't get too greedy. Just because it seems like you might have the advantage, you shouldn't use that advantage as an opportunity to take everything from your ex. Instead, be happy that you may get the things that are important to you. When you decide to have contested divorce, it is important for you to choose your battles. You can't win them all, so you shouldn't think that are entitled to anything. When you get married, you are basically saying that you're willing to share everything that you own, so when you get divorced, you are risking having to share your belongings as well.
