ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder is a condition similar to ADHD i.e. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder but without hyperactivity. ADD is a term used interchangeably with ADHD for patients not showing signs of hyperactivity and impulsiveness. This disorder affects both children and adults. The term Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the official name used by the American Psychiatric Association, it includes hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive behaviors. Attention Deficit Disorder Symptoms. The ADD symptoms show inattention towards work and generally however without any show of hyperactivity/ impulsive behaviors. This inattentive trait is called ADD. ADD patients find it difficult to complete the task and follow directions and concentrate on work. Also the make careless mistakes repeatedly, they are disorganized and get distracted easily. The other ADD symptoms are sluggish and slow response, daydreaming and analyzing information. ADD symptoms in adults are associated to remaining focused on the daily tasks. Their concentration level is very low and they can be distracted by unnecessary sounds or sights. Other symptoms include – • Attention keeps wandering and inability to keep focusrn• Encounter reading difficulty and listening to othersrn• Loosing track of conversation or “zoning out” without realizing itrn• Fails to meet deadlinesrn• Make careless details and overlook details ADD TreatmentrnLike ADHD, ADD also has its treatment methods divided in two types of approaches psychotherapy and medication. However, ADD has no cure, only the symptoms of the disease can be controlled. Medication - Medications like stimulants have a good effect on ADD symptoms. The regular medicines prescribed are Ritalin, Dexedrine, Concerta, Metadate, Focalin, and Adderall along wioth other non-stimulating medicines atomoxetine, tricyclic antidepressants and bupropion. Psychotherapy - There are a number of non medical processes that can be put in place to help an ADD patient cope with the day to day life. • ADD patients can get effective aid by attending special education in schools customized for their needs. As it is easy for them to settle in the atmosphere they find it easy to learn. • ADD patients can be treated with behavior modification measures to aid good behavior and reduce child’s problem behavior. • Counseling session with an expert can help patients learn better ways to handle their emotions and frustration and improve self-esteem. • Training for Social Skills will help the patient control the impulsive behavior.
