Side Effects: The herb can result in some negative side effects. Hallucinations are reported to occur, though this is extremely rare and only happens in extremely isolated occurrences. Damiana also causes slight irritation to the urethra, which has led many people to believe that the herb is actually a potent aphrodisiac, though no there is no scientific evidence to support this. Large amounts of damiana may result in permanent liver damage, so be sure to only take the recommended dosage. If any of these side effects occur, cease taking the herb immediately and report to a licensed health care professional.
Benefits:
Despite numerous scientific tests, damiana has yet to yield to prove it is an effective aphrodisiac or hallucinogen, despite scattered claims that it has. Most evidence points towards an elaborate hoax when the herb was first introduced, to deceive people into believing the herb was an aphrodisiac to make money.
The damiana herb, however, may convey a powerful placebo effect if given to an individual with no knowledge of its lack of use. Results may vary from person to person, so try the herb if you feel it is right for you or would like to spice up your love life.
