- Fertility awareness Understandably, this is the most important reason for closely monitoring the time of ovulation. Fertility awareness is basically monitoring ovulation and timing sexual intercourse to maximize the chances of getting pregnant. Most experts however advocate regular sexual activity throughout the cycle as the best means of achieving a pregnancy. Notwithstanding, many women still pay particularly attention to the time of ovulation in trying to achieve a pregnancy. In some way, it helps increase their awareness of what is going on.
- Determining the length of the luteal phase The luteal phase is the time of the cycle after ovulation and before the next menstrual flow. Many women call it the ‘days post-ovulation(DPO)’. The length of the luteal phase is fairly consistent for each woman from cycle to cycle. It is usually 12 to 16 days. rnThe length of the luteal phase not only helps women more accurately determine the time of ovulation but also the time of the next menstrual flow. By subtracting the length of the luteal phase from the length of your cycle, you get the most likely date of ovulation. Remember that it is just an approximation. Menses will occur regularly after the fixed luteal phase length after ovulation. Furthermore, the luteal phase length is important to sustain an early pregnancy. A short luteal phase, less than 10 days, is unable to sustain a pregnancy and is one of the causes of repeated miscarriages.
- Natural birth control methods Some women have used the monitoring of the signs of ovulation as a natural contraceptive technique. By determination the moment of ovulation, they can prevent sexual intercourse or use a barrier contraceptive. Though some women have reported some success with this technique, this technique has been reported to have a very high failure rate and is therefore not advisable to be used as the sole birth control method.
