When a parrot is presented to its new owners and home it is important that its needs are completely understood from the beginning in order to reduce any trauma of relocation. Parrots come in various shapes and sizes and each kind may demonstrate different tendencies however all parrots must receive a fitting balanced diet in order to stay healthy. The general diet for a parrot should contain fresh produce (fruit and vegetables), high quality parrot seed enriched with essential vitamins and parrot pellets as well as fresh water daily. In order to reduce the chance of illness and infection a parrots living area (birdcage) should be regularly cleaned. Parrot owners should also include in their birdcage cleaning routine daily washing of all food and water dishes as it is significant to make sure that the parrot has clean food and water. Parrot owners should always have clean hands themselves when handling their parrot, preparing their food and even cleaning their dishes as so to minimize bacterial infections. Their cage should be located where the family spend a lot of their time and can easily interact with the bird, however even if Mom does spend a lot of time in the kitchen this place isn't ideal due to the birds risk of chemicals and fumes from human cooking and other associated dangers. Owners should be aware that a parrots nails will need to be cut on a regular basis Failure to perform this out can lead to problems for the parrot. Even though a parrots beak grows at all times also, it is less of a concern as parrots grind their beaks when they forage for food and explore. It is a good idea for their cage to have some sand in it as this will help also. Also many owners have their parrots wings clipped every couple of weeks which reduces their flight considerably and this is done to stop the parrot causing injury to itself and potentially others. Parrots in the wild utilize rain showers to keep their feathers and plumage in tip top condition and owners can mist or bath their birds once a day using fresh clean water from a sprayer or a water bottle. Although correct parrot care is quite detailed and requires everyday, the upshot of having a healthy happy pet who is intelligent, funny and engaging is more than sufficient reason to willingly do it.
