We have all heard at some point in our lives “Never put off tomorrow what you can do today.” But it is easy to say that you are going to get stuff done today, and harder to actually do them. This is especially true for our household chores. While we know the direct benefits of getting them done immediately, it is easy to put off seemingly small chores like washing a few dishes or putting some things away. It can be done tomorrow, where we will obviously have more time. But putting off small tasks like these says something bad about your work ethic and will sap your energy and motivation over the long run. No room or sink becomes a pigsty ove ight. What happens is that we allow a little more filth, and then a little more and a little more each day. Then we wake up one day, look at our surroundings, and bemoan how we will have to spend the entire day cleaning up. And as How Do I Do Money observes, you are trapped in a no-win situation. Either you don’t do anything, feel disgusted with your dirty surroundings, and have your motivation sapped over time. Or you do clean your room, only to be exhausted by the end and in no mood to do anything else for the rest of the day. Exhausted like someone running free background checks. Instead of waiting until things get too bad, get proactive with chores early on. Do a few dishes at a time instead of waiting until the sink is half full. Spend 30 minutes every day cleaning your room instead of waiting until Saturday to do it all at once. By creating a better home and work environment, you can show that you have accomplished something and created a better place to take care of your other, more important assignments. It should be noted that you do not want your day to be distracted by doing the small, unimportant tasks when you have a big task waiting. But the small chores matter too. And by getting them done, you can boost your motivation knowing you have accomplished something and can feel ready to handle the next, bigger thing.
