Prosperity is on everyone’s minds these days. I just spent $60 to fill up my gas tank! Physicians from of all ages seem to be struggling financially. At one time, our high salaries made us somewhat immune to the viscidities of the economy. After all, people will always have babies and unfortunately become sick. However, the rising costs of liability insurance (Dade County Florida Ob/Gyns pay over $200,000 a year), decreased reimbursements, and increase of practice overhead ha

What You Didn’t Learn in Medical School and What You Need to Succeed in the 21st Century Information Technology As quietly as it’s kept, or maybe it’s not so quiet but you are overwhelmed by it, there is a revolution going on in front of your nose. That revolution is the way we learn and access information. As physicians we know that more and more health information will be obtained and delivered by the internet. Although 50% of physicians have websites for their practices,

Is Your Career Against the Wall? How to Turn Major Problems into Unlimited Solutions and Success Sometimes our lives and careers get into situations that I will refer to as “Against the Wall.” What I mean is that situations or circumstances have become so uncomfortable, actually so miserable that we have to make a change. The wall, the problem or problems, appears hard and immovable. We are backed up against it. We may even be pinned against it and we feel as if there are no

"The Call" was what prompted you to want to be a doctor and in "Answering The Call," you took those difficult pre-med courses in college, persevered through medical school and residency, and then triumphantly and joyfully entered private practice or academic life. There's no doubt that you have already made an impact on the world. Yet, now you are hearing a new "Call." And contrary to popular opinion, it is not unusual for physicians to change directions. Imhotep, the ancie

One of my favorite movies is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the movie, Henry Jones Sr., Indiana's father, is a Holy Grail scholar and has been keeping a notebook with clues about the location of the Grail. The Nazis and an unsavory collector want to capture the Holy Grail because of its promise of immortality and invincibility. n The elder Jones Sr. is captured, and his notebook taken by the Nazis. Indiana rescues his father, and they race to prevent the collector and

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Lori Linell Hall

We all have a purpose or calling and most of our discontent, dissatisfaction, and even burnout with our personal and professional life stems from not answering "The Call" from our spirit. My definition of "The Call" is:

A Persistent Burning Desire, An Undeniable Inner Knowing Where Inspiration, Passion, Capability, and Talent Intersect to be of Service to The World.

And "Answering the Call:"

A Persistent Burning Desire, An Undeniable Inner Knowing Where Inspiration, Passion, Capability, and Talent Intersect to be of Service to The World.

I believe that we are spirit having a human experience and the "goal" of life is for our true selves, who we are at our center, to unfold. I also believe that we are all on the archetypal hero/heroine's journey based on Joseph Campbell's work. We answer our call, cross the threshold to adventure to pursue our calling and truth, have helpers or allies that aid us, undergo initiation, as well as trials in gaining wisdom; and return with that wisdom or boon, to launch into service to our communities and the world. In doing this we seek our own reality, we learn who we are. We as Krishnamurti says "explode from the center." We permit ourselve to become totally human and are conce ed with the total welfare, and alleviating the total misery and confusion in the world.

I have tried to use these principles in health care to teach physicians, nurses, health care professionals and patients that who they are at their center is health, joy, and and love. In order to heal anyone, and the health care system, one has to heal oneself first, because the Universal law is that you can only give what you have. The ultimate gift, is the gift of health so why not see and hold a vision of health and love instead of the illusions of disease and death.

Additionally, success is not a destination but a journey. We can only be successful in each moment. Although answering "The Call" takes action, this action is secondary to our thoughts, our consciousness. What we believe in and value, what we can dream and imagine at our center or core ,is what we manifest and will manifest in the world. To transform we have to shift, change, sometimes radically change our beliefs. We have to wake up! My goal is to help those who are choosing to wake up, who are choosing freedom, choosing to change the world to a better place.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali say:

When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds. Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world.
