Finches are well loved for their beautiful colors and singing voice. They are an excellent pet for beginners because of their cheerful nature. If you are planning of adding finches or your finches’ family is growing and needed additional cage, you should keep in mind that their cage must be properly set-up. It is very important for them to have a flying space and basic things needed by them must also be provided. I have provided here some information in setting up the cage for your finches. 1. Finches can be kept either in cages or aviaries, but avoid placing their cage where they may get wet when it rains or avoid exposing them to extreme heat by not putting their cage in direct sunlight. 2. The bigger the cage of the finch, the better for them. Finch cage needs to have adequate flying space for their exercise. By flying they are exercising their flight muscle that keeps them active and healthy. But, the width of the cage is more vital than its height because they need enough room to fly horizontally. 3. The bars of the cage must be spaced according to the size of the finches, the birds must not be able to fit through the bars. 4. Your cage should have a two-inch lip up on the sides that will catch the falling seeds. 5. A dish for food and a drinker for water must also be placed inside the cage, also provide a water bath inside where the finches could take a dip into when they are feeling hot or greasy. Make sure that all these does not easily trip over because if your cage is set-up properly a once a month cleaning is only needed. Their food dish and water bowl must be put on opposite sides of the cage to encourage the finches to fly and exercise. 6. Put perches and swing within the cage. Put them in one side of the cage that will not blocked the flying space of the bird and away from their food and water dish. 7. The bottom of the cage must be lined with newspaper to catch their fecal droppings. 8. Finches need sunlight. You can place their cage near a window but also make sure that there will also be a good shade where finches can stay when it gets hot. And if natural sunlight is not possible, you can put an artificial light with a timer that will simulate day. 9. The finch cages must be put away from noise and active environment. Finches dont want to be petted and held as they easily get stressed with too much attention. 10. And if you want your finches to breed or is hoping for chicks, you should provide them with a nestbox or a wicker nest.
