Power napping is it the refuge of the lazy? Or are there good reasons to power nap? In the 12 benefits of power napping we explore why more of us should take a midday nap.

In the Benefits of Sleep we found that we needed sleep in order to function at our best, but some 3% of us need less than 6 hours sleep including Thomas Edison & Margret Thatcher, while others like Albert Einstein and Calvin Coolidge needed more than 10 hours of sleep a year.

How long to nap?

Even a 10 second nano nap is proven to refresh you. While a 60 to 90 minute sleep will repair cells and allow time for our amazing bodies to carry out the functions and benefits outlined above. In between there are micro naps, mini naps.

Experiment what works best for you. For myself I find that usually I nap for between 20 and 60 minutes longer than that I feel a bit groggy. At what point do you feel the best, the most alert and happy for longest.

Winston Churchill summed up the benefits of power napping as follows

You must sleep sometime between lunch and dinner, and no half-way measures. Take off your clothes and get into bed. That’s what I always do. Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the day. That’s a foolish notion held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to accomplish more. You get two days in one-well, at least one and a half, I’m sure. – Winston Churchill

So find a corner, don eye mask to reduce light, ear plugs to cut out sound and maybe an alarm so that you know you won’t sleep too long and gain the benefits of power napping that Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton , Lance Armstrong and many other famous people found.
