For the past twenty years, governments have seriously requested that businesses increase their environmental protection policies. They have included it as a strategic issue in public policy, issued laws against violators, and specified standards or sets of regulations for the businesses to follow. ISO 14001 certification is one of these standards, and is also the highest acclaimed standard for environmental protection, recognized by governments all over the world. Businesses that take environmental sustainability seriously are realizing the importance of the ISO 14001 standard to curb the impacts on their environment. However, numerous obstacles can appear during the certification process, and the following three points explain a few of these obstacles.

Organizational Changes

The implementation of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard demands that the business has a definite and feasible Environmental Management System or EMS. However, the establishment of a rigid EMS implies a lot of organizational changes that the members of a business have to go through. So, a major obstacle is the potential unpreparedness or reluctance of employees to accept the establishment of the EMS.

Poor Understanding of EMS Principles

Lack of awareness and understanding of EMS principles is another major obstacle a business faces when getting ISO certified. Senior management needs to be thoroughly involved in the process of establishing the EMS. They should be aware of principles, practices, and procedures that come with the EMS, and stay committed to eliminating their business’s environmental impacts. From waste treatment to reduced use of toxic inputs and controlling energy consumption, there are a lot of principles included in the EMS. So, until the business management team ensures the employees are also aware of the principles that apply to them, it can be difficult to establish the EMS.

Suppliers Check

Environmental management certification is achieved when every integral part of the business is observed to be environmentally credible. This includes the supply chain agents as well, who provide the resources to your business for production. It means that suppliers and vendors need to be aware and follow environmentally sustainable processes to provide the resources you need. Sometimes, it can be difficult to ensure that all your suppliers are following their respective environmental regulations, which will help to prove your compliance to ISO 14001 standard.

These above points show some critical obstacles that come along when an organization wishes to get ISO 14001 certification and ensure environmental responsibility and corporate social responsibility. However, obstacles are meant to be crossed. There are expert ISO consultants who advise businesses on how to resolve these obstacles, implement the EMS, and achieve certification with ease.
