It is one of the reasons why aspiring journalists enrol themselves in one of the best colleges for Mass Communication in India . However, the subjects in this course don’t just limit to the ones which you will apply in your day-to-day journalistic work. There are other interesting niche subjects as well, which might indirectly link to the field in discussion. Let’s take a look at a few of them. 1. Sociology Sociology is the study of human society, which encompasses human relationships, social interaction and human culture. The aim of this study is to evaluate various types of human body language and their acceptance of societal change and evolution. A news item evokes different reactions from people. It can either challenge or strengthen their fundamental beliefs. By studying sociology in this course, a journalist will be able to deal with all kinds of reactions. The reaction might be overly negative or positive. However, the journalists can measure how the society reacts to a certain form of a news item. This will help them evaluate their own work and make them decide whether they want to proceed with such news items in the future. The whole experience will add immeasurably to their growth as a journalist. 2. Psychology Psychology is the study of behavior and mind. It helps in understanding the complexity of human behavior by assessing human thoughts and feelings. The findings are then compared to the general principles of human behavior to draw various conclusions. This fascinating study has great use in journalism. It is a commonly known fact that the human mind can be influenced by the articles they read and videos they watch. With the use of social media on the rise, access to such content has become easier. Since there is no restriction in posting content, a lot of false propaganda can be spread to influence people. This can lead to unwanted elements in society. To stop this, journalists can use their own medium to publish facts in an unbiased manner. This is where psychology comes into play. When a false propaganda is disproved by providing damning evidence, the audience will start reporting the false content, which will ultimately lead to its ban. Thus, journalists can use psychology for the good of the society. 3. Advertising Advertising teaches journalists how they can grab the public’s attention for their articles. It can be through a catchy copy, or creating hype for a forthcoming piece. This will help the article reach to a wider audience and generate a lot of views. Students will also learn the business side of things, as a lot of newspapers and news channels are dependent on advertising revenue. This sustains them healthily. They can thus be able to provide content in a more aesthetic way. These are the few niche subjects that you will be taught in BA in Mass Communication . By joining a top journalism college, you will put yourself on the path to become a very successful journalist. All the best!
