Safety can only be dangerous with an ergonomic chair; if you perceive the chair as safe, when in fact it is NOT safe.
Therefore you must learn to notice the safety issues around an ergonomic chair, because they are not always the same as a standard chair.
It does not matter which ergonomic chair that you are using, or about to purchase; as the safety issues are the same on them all. It is up to YOU to see the dangers that may cause you to fall and hurt yourself.
The first area to consider is that the chair moves, because it is fitted with rolling casters on the legs. This movement enables you to remain in the chair, so that you can move its location without standing up.
The danger comes when you want to get out of the chair. The ergonomic chair will move, unless it is fitted with locking casters that prevent the chair from moving, when you want to stand up.
This is important, particularly if your legs are not strong enough to lift your whole body weight up to a standing position, such as when you are very heavy or an obese person.
You will want to use your arms on the armrests and use the back of your legs to push against the seat for helping you stand up. Without locking casters, the ergonomic chair will move away and you will land on the floor.
All our ergonomic chairs are provided with standard locking casters that will hold the chair in a locked position for standing, or for remaining in one position while you are working.
The second area to consider in safety is your sitting position. The base of the ergonomic chair is needs to be adjusted so that your hips, knees and ankles are all at a 90 degree angle.
This angle distributes the load of your body weight when sitting equally between all your lower limb joints; so that your ankles, knees and hips are all equally balanced with no pressure areas.
In order to attain this equal balance, you need an easy mechanism for adjusting the ergonomic height of the chair to accommodate people with different heights.
The adjustments on all our seats will vary according to the functional abilities of each person for making the necessary adjustment to your seat. Your seat in the ergonomic chair is your pivot point and we need make you safe and comfortable for creating the correct position.
Once your lower limbs are correctly positioned with all ninety degree angles, including your pelvic bones; your spine will naturally be placed vertically above your pelvic joints know as the neutral position.
You are now seated in a balanced position for ergonomic sitting as both sides are equally distributing your load and balancing your body weight. You can now adjust your back rest to fit you in this position. This will maintain your spine in this safest, relaxed and upright, neutral position.
It may seem awkward at first, but do persevere with this position; as all your skeletal will become relaxed as a new position of comfort. Once your spine becomes adjusted to this position, you may find that you will no longer be leaning on the backrest.
Safety in Ergonomic chairs is about your transfer mobility for getting in and out of the chair safely. It is also about the physical position of comfort when sitting in the chair. And then it includes using your physical functional performance in the chair that creates the movements necessary for prolonged sitting. Without these three elements, you will never feel comfortable in an Ergonomic chair.
