There are of course lots of people who know that they are overweight. These people will either make the decision to try to slim down, or they will simply not bother because they are happy with how they look. However it should be pointed out that there are plenty of people out there who only realise that they are overweight as a result of certain events taking place in their lives.

There are actually three weight loss triggers that I want to discuss with regards to this issue. The first of these triggers is often when a person breaks up with their long-term partner. The fact is that when people are involved in a relationship, they don't necessarily need to think about being ultra slim all the time because their partner accepts them for who they are.

However when this relationship breaks down and they find themselves single again, all that changes because they now need to try to think about attracting a new partner. This means that being overweight may possibly hold them back and affect their confidence. So it is very common for single people to try to slim down to find a new man.

A second weight loss trigger is when a person's friends all seem to be losing weight at the same time. Although we may be happy with how we look at the moment, when all our friends are losing half a stone or a stone in weight, it is only natural that we will start to analyze our own bodies and see how we measure up.

I know lots of people who have gone on a diet simply because all their friends have done the same. What's sad about all this is that many of these people were not necessarily fat to begin with. They were just a few pounds heavier than they would ideally like.

Finally one other trigger that can make you want to lose a few pounds is when you look at some photos of yourself and realise that you are far bigger than you thought you were. When you see yourself in a mirror every day, you do not necessarily realise how you look to other people, particularly side-on. Therefore it is only when you look at a photo, or even a video of yourself, that you realise that you are overweight.

So all of these things can trigger weight loss, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing either because being a healthy weight will always have its advantages. Your friends are often far too polite to tell you that you are carrying a few extra pounds at the moment. So you often need one of these triggers to kick-start your weight loss efforts and successfully get into shape.
