Over the years I have written numerous articles, developed product and spoken on the topic of using live presentations as a way to sell books. If an author is proficient at the art of speaking they can make hundreds, thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars in book sales. This is true with both paid and nonpaid engagements.
To assure greater success it is essential to be fully prepared. A huge part of the preparation is to know as much as you can about the group you will present to.
A great way to do this is with a pre-engagement questionnaire. This is something that many speakers don’t do and yet, something that can serve you well.
When you are able to know who your audience is the experience will be better for you, the audience and the meeting planner.
One question you want to ask is, “May I make my books available for purchase?” It is a major mistake to sell books without first getting the green light to do so.
Another important thing to know is the room set up. If you are someone who enjoys walking into the audience you need to make sure the room set up supports this.
I have been known to ask for very specific room setups. After all, this is yet another thing that can take away from or improve the experience for all concerned.
A third very important thing to know is if there are any VIPs in the audience; CEOs, presidents, special guests, etc. It’s nice to know this in advance so you can research them and actually incorporate something about the person into your presentation. When done right this can really enhance your presentation.
You might be wondering how knowing all of this will increase book sales. It’s simple. The more enjoyable your presentation the more likely it is people will be eager to buy your book(s).
