Your life satisfaction can affect every aspect of your life – how you approach things, how you interact with others, how much you enjoy anything you do and so much more. When you are not satisfied with your life, research has shown that you are more susceptible to depression, an often debilitating disease whose tentacles can have far-reaching and detrimental effects on your well-being. The lower your life satisfaction, the higher risk you have of depression. Likewise, if you suffer from depression, you are more likely to feel dissatisfaction with your life. From this, it is clear that your psychological well-being rests largely on the shoulders of your life satisfaction, even though the relationship between it and depression is reciprocal. What determines life satisfaction, how can you measure it and how can you improve it? Life satisfaction is influenced by many things, but there are three areas that comprise the majority of it – positive or negative. The extent to which you engage in social interaction and the strength of your personal relationships has an effect. How you perceive your work, educational experience or performances on various things plays an important role, too. The extent to which you are pleased with who you are and your religious and spiritual life also influences your life satisfaction. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is used to gauge your life satisfaction in a way that is measurable. This five question scale is largely subjective because there are no right or wrong answers; the answers reflect your innermost thoughts and self-assessments, meaning life satisfaction is determined on a more cognitive level, rather than on an emotional one. This brief assessment measures your overall satisfaction with life, but it can help clue you in on the areas of your life with which you are least satisfied. Now you have an understanding of what determines how satisfied you are in life and a way to measure it, which puts you on the right path to increasing your life satisfaction and lowering your susceptibility to depression. The next step is to increase your life satisfaction. This is accomplished in a number of ways, but the following three tips are a great place to start. Tip #1: Form stronger bonds with the people in your life. Friends and other close relationships that are meaningful and strong not only make you healthier and happier, but they also raise your overall satisfaction with life. Make an effort to listen intently and talk to the people in your life that matter, and focus on nurturing and building quality relationships. Tip #2: Learn the art of forgiveness. If you are like many people, you too often let events, betrayals, lost opportunities and failures of the past affect you as you move through life. Stop allowing yourself to do this. Learn to look to the future instead of dwelling in the past. When you successfully do this, you enjoy a higher life satisfaction. Tip #3: Hire a life coach. A life coach can help you succeed with both of the first two tips. In addition, a life coach gives you the knowledge, support and guidance in a vast number of areas that work to increase your life satisfaction, including the ability to view success differently, stay positive, focus on your individual strengths, use your weaknesses to your advantage, know your true self, teach you how to live with intention while embracing the core values that make up who you are and much, much more. As was said earlier, your life satisfaction affects every aspect of your life, and dissatisfaction with your life can leave you open to depression, which can further deteriorate your satisfaction. However, you hold the power within you to make the changes that put your life on the path of success, healthy social interaction and positive life satisfaction. Whether you choose to embrace the tips listed above, or you develop a plan to grow more satisfied with life on your own, the important thing is that you do what needs doing.
