Emergency room care is very expensive, which is why the Affordable Care Act (ACA) not only promotes preventative care, but also encourages people whose illness does not require emergency treatment to use healthcare clinics.

This has led to an increase in the number of healthcare clinics throughout the country. If you are considering establishing a healthcare clinic, there are a few factors you need to be aware of before you take that step.

Medical Technology

One of the features of the ACA is the push for healthcare providers to use health information technology. Research indicates that use of technology and data can improve the quality of healthcare while also making the system more efficient.

In addition, patients are approaching their healthcare differently, requesting electronic access to their healthcare records. People are learning that the more they know about their health, the healthier they are. It also creates more engagement between the healthcare provider and the patient.

Quality Suppliers

Although this may seem like a minor detail, it is important that you choose medical suppliers who deliver promptly, have adequate inventory in stock and offer knowledge about new or innovative products that could benefit your clinic.

You will need suppliers for items as simple as latex gloves and needles to highly-technical diagnostic equipment from places like Pacific Integrated Manufacturing, Inc. Your patients expect you to have all the supplies you need on hand to treat their illness which is why good suppliers are very critical.

Location, Location, Location

Where you place your healthcare clinic is just as important as having the right supplies and technology. If possible, locate your clinic near bus and train stations if they are available in your area. Be sure there is ample parking, preferably off-street. You will need to be sure all entrances are handicap accessible and that the location you choose is zoned for a medical practice.

Adequate bathroom facilities must be available and choose a location whose demographics fit with the type of clinic you plan to open. If you are considering a walk-in urgent care clinic, locating in a lower-income area or an area where college students tend to live might be your best choice.

Staffing Choices

Your staff is critical to your patient care which means you want to choose them wisely. Choose a manager who has an understanding of patient management, human resources, marketing, finance and other aspects of the business that the medical team may not understand.

Your entire staff should have an understanding of your vision for the clinic, how you intend to grow the clinic and an understanding of healthcare trends. Of course, you also want to choose staff who want your patients to get healthy and stay healthy as well as those who have a pleasant, warm “bedside” manner.

These are just a few of the factors you will need to consider when opening a healthcare clinic or other type of medical practice. By focusing on these factors, your clinic will operate like a well-oiled machine and allow you to provide the best service possible to your patients.
