Consider carefully the arrangement made with your credit card processing vendor, that contract may just lock you into paying high rates and hidden costs. Think twice before jumping into a contract with a particular vendor, the industry is highly competitive and rigged with hidden language meant to take advantage of the merchant. Here are five simple mistakes that can be avoided by business owners when contracting with a credit card merchant processor.
1. Being lured into a contract through the promise of free equipment and hardwarer
As is always the case in business there is no such thing as a free lunch as the saying goes. The offer free equipment will most come under a backdoor charge for some other service later in the terms of the contract. Free equipment is often a sales tactic used by vendors to entice unknowing merchants to sign up with their company. Once signed on the hidden fees and high transactions rate can occur
2. Having been verbally promised one thing while the contract you signed says otherwiser
Sales associates can be persuasive with the language they use and the picture they paint to sell a product. Be careful of those sales people who promise you the world only later to deliver a contract with hidden and fees which were not discussed.
3. Not comparison shopping before committing to a particular vendorr
As stated earlier the merchants credit card industry is extremely competitive and with competition comes more advantages for the business owners. Be sure to explore all possible avenues as many companies will fight for your new business in this market. Ask question and compare rates to several different vendors. 4. Not paying attention to the termination fees
Contracts almost always come with cancellation fees when you terminate your business with them or move on. Be aware of those potential costs might be when you sign on with your provider.
Before making the final decision on which merchant to use consult the Better Business Bureau and check your vendors rating in their system. The language in these contracts can confuse and distract business owners so take your time and choose carefully. Entering into a high rate credit card processing contract can affect your business profits sustainably. When deciding which company to go with be sure you are comfortable with the services provided and the contract outlined.
