If your relationship is on the rocks, your girlfriend may have suggested that she wants a break from you for a few days or even a couple of weeks. It may sound like a daunting prospect, especially since you feel like you are losing your grip over this relationship and desperately want your girlfriend back. You may even have resisted her efforts. However, if she is adamant, you need to question your thinking and take the right steps.
1. Break and Break Up
To begin with, don't equate 'break' with 'break up'. They are two completely different things. If your girlfriend has said that she simply needs a break, it doesn't mean that she wants to get rid of you for good. What she probably needs is some space to gather her thoughts and an opportunity to escape from the constant pressure of the rough patch this relationship has hit. Sometimes a person may seek time away from their partner to look within themselves and discover how much that significant other actually means to them. It is also an opportunity to flush out the negative thoughts about the person you are with and rediscover your affections. So, a break may not be all that bad, even if you are signing off on a bad note. With some introspection, time and space, your girlfriend may actually cool down and then cooperate with you to get your relationship back on track.
2. Respecting Her Wish
Whatever frame of mind your girlfriend is likely to swing towards, you need to consider the possible repercussions of denying her the opportunity to take a break, by constantly insisting that she change her mind. Just when your relationship is seeing bad times, the last thing your girlfriend wants is over-insistence. You may reasonably suggest once or twice that a break is not the right way forward, but if your girlfriend persists, give her the space she needs. She will respect you more for it, and her respect is just what you need at this stage.
3. Using the Time Well
If you agree to a break, you can use the time to do some thinking yourself. With time you may just find the right answers to make this relationship work. Think of what constructive inputs you can give your girlfriend, and how you can change your behavior to make your relationship work.
4. Possibility of Communication
If you have decided to go on a break for a week, it does not mean that she will not want to talk to you during that time. However, even if she is missing you and does want to talk, she may feel hesitant since it was she who insisted on the break in the first place. So, you need to be the one to make her feel comfortable here. You must convey to her that a line of communication is open between you, and if she does want to talk to you during the 'break' days, you will be glad to hear from her.
On the whole, treat this as an opportunity to show your girlfriend how mature and sensitive you are rather than how bull-headed you can be. That is the best way to get your girlfriend back, and resume your happy times.
