When you become a parent long gone are the days of jumping in your car and driving 12+ hours nonstop to wherever you want. Those spontaneous adventures are sadly a thing of the past, now that you're a responsible parent, and when it comes to things like this it's necessary to begin planning days in advance and make sure that you have time to do everything you want to. You also have to make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep your family safe. When driving with children, there are a few precautions that must be met. Take The Car In For A Tune-Up Having a mechanic check the tires, fluids, filters, lights, battery, belt and air conditioning system is a must before any long trip. That way you can make sure that your vehicle is as safe and as ready for the road as possible. This can really take a lot of stress off of worrying about having your car break down on the road in the middle of nowhere. It is also a good idea to make sure you take your car in with plenty of time to spare. By taking it into the shop at least a week early you can ensure that there is enough time to fix/replace items that may be worn down. Prepare The Car With Safety Gear Despite the tune-up, be sure to stock the car with extra fluids, a set of jumper cables and a (functional) spare tire. Additional items to have on hand include a first aid kit, flashlight, water and non-perishable food. Also, do you have a GPS? If not, it may be wise to buy one, as well as a physical map. Also, many phones come with GPS systems installed. And regardless of whether you plan to use your phone's GPS or not, bring a phone charger for the car (it will come in handy during emergencies). Make Sure Your Kids Are Comfortable When it comes to safety it is also important that your kids are comfortable. Heavy bags and luggage should be placed in the trunk and floor of the vehicle, where it is out of the way of the kids. It is also a good idea to keep the area where they are seated free from unnecessary items that kids can hurt themselves with (like snow/ice scraper). Stop Periodically Bathroom and food breaks, exercise, and face-to-face time will make the trip take longer, but will also keep things running smoothly. It's uncommon for kids to stay put in one place for too long, and road trips are a time when bottled up energy can wreak havoc. Also, depending on how far you are going, it is a good idea to schedule hotel stops along the way so everyone can sleep each night, or if you don’t want to have to pay for a hotel a nice alte ative would be to rent an RV such as those at FretzRV. Overall, there is nothing more fun than being able to go on a road trip with your family, but you have to make sure to keep everyone safe. Taking these tips into consideration will ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for everyone. Happy and safe kids will make all the difference while traveling with the family.
