4 Signs Your Employees Would Rather Work Elsewhere & What to Do About It

Every employer loves good employees, and it is their biggest desire to retain them for long. However, even these good employees sometimes do wish to leave you. It is a fact that you cannot always succeed in convincing them to change their mind. It will, however, be very beneficial if you can see this coming and plan what to do about it. Here are four ways to tell that they are on the move, and possible solutions to these.
When Handling a Personal Crisis
Your employees will go through tough times and some of these, e.g., divorce may make them think differently about working with you. They may feel that getting a new job somewhere else will make them happier. When you know any of your employees are going through a hard time, get close to them and let them talk it out. See whether you can make arrangements to give them a smoother time as they transition emotionally.
Leave Office on Time
While leaving on time is not necessarily bad, consistently going away on time may indicate that they don’t enjoy being around. This is more so if previously they were known to stay behind to finish some task or the other. When there are deadlines, and they don’t care to finish up, this must not get ignored. Talk to them. Know if there is something about the workplace which makes them uncomfortable. Analyze their feedback and know how best to respond to the situation.
Preferred Use of Private Equipment or Communication
When gradually your employees prefer to use private means of operation rather than the company-provided ones, it may be an indication they are hiding something. For example, forsaking the use of company email and using personal email for communication or using their laptops for work-related duties. Interrogate such patterns and question the reason for such when the company guidelines state otherwise.
Observe a Deteriorating Attitude
When you realize that gradually the attitude of your employee manifests consistent negativity, it may indicate they are feeling tired of the workplace environment. Talk to them—something has probably happened that rubbed them the wrong way. The experts at WhenIWork are of the opinion that this could be as a result of issues like stress, which can get addressed. Interrogate what is making them annoyed and see if it something worth your consideration.
If the attitude in the workplace has been deteriorating with multiple individuals, then you may want to consider changing things up around the office. Consider adding color and unique themes to encourage a more positive attitude. You may even want to look into ways to improve physical comfort, such as investing in new office furniture.
While it is not mandatory that you must retain all your employees, don’t lose those who you shouldn’t. Failure to observe some of these hints can make valuable employees venture out from your company just because of something that was preventable. Be keen to see, and be wise to know what decision to take.
