The good news is that by reading this article you and your spouse should be able to avoid experiencing the ugly side of divorce that can be very lengthy and very expensive. Keep in mind, divorce is just like any other undertaking in that the more you know, the better off you will be. Our goal in writing this article is to 'arm' you with a lot of knowledge about the fundamentals of keeping the cost of divorce low. rnBelow is a list of four tips for keeping the cost of divorce low. Our hope is that your will familiarize these four tips and then implement them into your divorce situation. If you will familiarize them and then implement them, you and your spouse will be able to save months of time and thousands of dollars on divorce. Tip #1 - Avoid 'Lawyering Up'. During the later stages of the marriage, both spouses have a natural tendency to 'lawyer up'. The obvious problem with giving in to this natural tendency is that it costs a lot of money to do so. Also, once you 'lawyer up', there is no turning back. Even if you and your spouse reconcile, dismissing the divorce will take weeks of time and will require the judge's approval. Take our advice and avoid giving in to the natural tendency to 'lawyer up'. Tip #2 - Do Not Surprise Your Spouse. During the early stages of the divorce tensions between you and your spouse are going to be high. Both of you will be experiencing strong feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. During this time it is very important that you do not surpise your spouse. This is true regardless of whether the surprise is positive or negative. If you surprise your spouse during the early stages, you are taking the risk that your spouse will have an emotional 'overreaction'. That 'overreaction' could cause your spouse to 'lawyer up'. Tip #3 - Communicate With Your Spouse. If you and your spouse are like most divorcing couples, you do not want to speak with each other. Take our advice and open a channel of communication. Doing so will increase the likelihood that your spouse will not drag out the divorce. It will also increase the likelihood of you and your spouse being able to reach a settlement. Tip #4 - Try To Settle. Once you have implemented tip number three, make sure that your spouse knows that you want to settle. By making your intentions clear, you will increase the liklihood that your spouse will not 'lawyer up'. With a little of bit of luck, you will be able to negotiate a full and final settlement outside of court and without having to spend a lot of money on unnecessary attorney fees.
