Shoulder injuries are very common because this joint is used frequently. You don’t have to be an athlete in order to injure this part of your body, it is sufficient to spend a lot of time at your desk job or household chores. The shoulder tends to have problems when you spend a great deal of time doing certain repetitious tasks, especially if you have to do frequent overhead motions.
The problem with shoulder injuries is that they can severely restrict your movement. If you have a frozen or stiff shoulder that does not heal for some reason then you’ll have to seek medical attention without any delay. This will result in considerable expenditure for you. It is far easier to prevent these injuries in the first place. In addition, there are a few exercises that you could do in order to strengthen this part of your body and prevent any injuries.
1. Try not to raise your arms over your shoulders: You need to be very careful when raising your arms very high. If your shoulder is already injured then you should restrict your arm movements when you swim, play ball games or lift weights. If you are an athlete then your coach should make you do light exercises that ensure you stay fit without injuring your shoulder further.
2. Improve your posture: If you have bad posture when walking, doing sports or merely sitting at your computer then you will be putting undue stress on your shoulders. Not only will this cause stiffness in this area but you can also suffer headaches because of it.
3. Warm up sufficiently before doing strenuous exercise: Apply heat from an external source to your shoulder before any exercise or sporting activity. Use a heat pad or take a warm shower before the exercise. Start with light exercises and work your way up towards more strenuous effort.
4. Strengthen your shoulder with the right exercises: Your physiotherapist or coach will be able to guide you with exercises that strengthen the shoulder muscles. Scapular press ups help strengthen the serratus anterior muscle. Pendulum stretching exercises are very useful because they reduce pressure on the rotator cuff. Be sure to do these exercises under proper supervision if you already have a problem with this part of your body.
You need to look after your shoulder well so that it functions properly. Remember that it is far easier to prevent shoulder injuries than to cure them.
